Baby Shower Gifts

Bibs of all colours! Content Warning: This blog will include topics of babies and pregnancies. Entering my late twenties meant entering the time of the baby showers and first birthdays. Having a crafty hobby means I can work up unique gifts, as I don’t know what store-bought items a) are already purchased, b) are useful or c) will end up being outgrown before use. A handmade baby blanket has been a safe bet, though I like adding something more to go with it. I was presented with a fantastic solution for this, crochet bibs! There are so many useful (and useless) baby products available, so why these bibs? Stitches By Trudy Bobble Bib pattern is my go to bib pattern. It is decorative, suitable for any gender and easy to adapt for any colour theme. (4 minute read) Pretty crochet bibs These aren’t specifically for new-borns; I would suggest they are more useful in the later baby stages leading into toddler-dom. The cotton yarn recommended in the pattern is perfect for catchin...

Baby Blanket Ahead of the Hype

A friend asked to commission a baby blanket of Boba Fett, which I was more than happy to do. I loved the pattern she had found on Ahooka’Migurumi . It was designed for tapestry technique though which would result in a square for a larger blanket. I looked online for further inspiration and found a great design made from small granny squares. I’ve tried to hunt it back down, but it’s lost to the trash-heap that is Pinterest. I can find a post which leads to an ad-site; if I image-search I find even worse results. If anyone can point me in the right direction, please drop me a line on the socials. My decision to do granny squares was thinking it would be easier for making on the move. I thought it would be less hassle than a C2C (corner to corner), which were very popular at the time. I was wrong. I hadn’t anticipated how many squares or how long it would take. I worked on it day and night around full-time job. It went with me on the train, on the bus, at my desk at lunch, on weekends....

Makin’ Whoopee (caps) – Story of the Jughead Beanie pattern

In early 2017, a friend sent me a screen shot of a boy in a hat and asked if I could make it for her. The message I was a little put off initially, as I could tell it was a knit design, but I decided to give it a go.  The base was simple enough, but the triangles almost stumped me. I stuck with it and finally got something I was happy with, and even better my friend loved it when it arrived. I didn’t think much else of it when I shared it on my page, I was happy with the design and assumed it would be a one off - until someone asked if it was a Jughead beanie.  Suddenly it clicked – Riverdale was coming. (5 minute read) Archie wasn’t something I had seen much of, other than the odd comic strip in the newspaper. I had heard murmurs online about a new show coming. I bit the bullet and started an Etsy store. Until this point, I made a few ad-hoc requests, making enough to cover some of the costs of the hobby. M y ‘customers’ were usually friends and family, maybe with a fe...

Creature Comforts and Mindfulness

When learning to crochet, one of the first patterns I learned was granny stitch. I went on a hunt for a nice baby blanket pattern and stumbled onto the granny star blanket. It is a perfect pattern when wanting to chill on the couch or when travelling. Third times a charm, or so I hope. I have written this up twice already, but silly mistakes and site crashes mean they’re lost to the ether. Time for offline writing and auto-save before uploading to the blog. When learning to crochet, one of the first patterns I learned was granny stitch. This is a simple repetitive pattern using 3 double crochet in groups. I have used it on many baby blankets and it is now my go to stitch when testing our a new yarn or when I want to zone out while crocheting. Granny stitch square is the most common form you’ll see around, it is certainly a classic stitch and for good reason. Making small squares and joining means a lot of tails to sew in though; and there’s only so many continuous granny squares I ca...

Blog: The First. Now with more Turtles

Life is full of firsts; first project, first pattern, first video and now: first blog! My name is Sarah, I'm a crocheter. I'm based in Sydney, Australia, which you will notice quickly when you check out my YouTube. The accent is strong with this one. I have been crocheting for coming up to a decade. I started out watching CrochetGeek on YouTube and never looked back. I have been sharing on Facebook since my very first beanie, then started expanding with Etsy, Instagram and more recently YouTube. There are a lot of changes happening in the social media world though, and it's always uncomfortable being at the whims of The Algorithm & ever changing TOS (terms of service). It feels about time to start sharing somewhere I can call my own. I think I'll start out with one of my favourite free patterns I've released: my baby turtles. This is a great introduction to making plushies, using scrap yarn and testing out new hooks. Free Downloadable PDF on Ravelry I wrote t...
